I was riding the train home from leeds after the mars volta concert and one of my thoughts in my hurting head and tired mind was that Chroma-Key could be used for computer game characters to place them in 'Real world' video.

I am pretty sure i know how to do it, but if anyone has had experience of Chroma-Key please post any helpful hints in this thread.

----------------------------------

My plan:

1. video a room using a DV cam and digitise the video to my computer.

2. create a 3d level (consiting of the one room) using Hammer(half life2 level editor). (lighting similar to the video footage.)

3. texture the whole level blue

4. run the map and position a spectator in the same area as the camera was in the real world footage

5. Have someone perform actions in the level

6. Chroma-Key technique in premiere and combine the 2 videos.

The result:

I am hoping that i wil then have a character from a game running around in my real world video.

------------------------------------

I hope to video the real footage sometime this week, and then wok on the rest of it the week after.

I will post the results in this thread in around 2 weeks.

see that was the beauty of the texturing the whole level one colour there is no background but the one colour. i can easily make a solid colour texture file and import it in to hammer. :)

you'll have a hell of a time deleting the backgrounds behind your characters. but assuming you can find a way to do it, simply make the background a colour you don't use (usually a 255 value green or other extreme colour) then yo add a chroma key transparency in premiere.
