K-Lite codec pack is pretty good too, haven't had any problems so far.

Google it.

There are a few programs out there that will let you inspect a movie file to find out what codecs are out there. The only one I could find in the 0.1s Google time I devoted to it was this:

http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?vtb

Looks pretty swish, didn't download it though.

search for 'windows media player classic' theres no install and the codecs are all built in, it plays dvds and can do subtitles.

Download VideoLAN Client (VLC) and it'll play pretty much any video file out there, no codecs needed.

Could be a divx codec, try downloading the free divx player from divx.com

It should at least tell you what codec you need to play it.
