It is not without a sense of irony that the world’s most popular sport of soccer, just so happens to be the one in most desperate need of a reincarnation to add a bit of excitement to the usually slow moving and low scoring sport. EA Sports BIG has done just that and slapped their popular “Street” brand onto the long running FIFA soccer series. While the game doesn’t quite offer the same level of excitement or enjoyment found in the NBA Street series or even the latest iteration of the NFL Street games, it does breathe a bit of life into an otherwise passed over sport by most gamers.
Gameplay
Needless to say, this ain’t the same brand of soccer that your grandparents used to play out in the front yard with little Timmy. FIFA Street is no holds barred soccer action; played, not on a green pasture of grass, but instead on venues that more resemble back alley basketball courts than soccer fields.
The game begins by you creating your custom character, complete with customizable tattoos and hair styles. While you won’t find the same amount of customization options as in Tiger Woods there are an admirable number of styles, giving you the ability to create a character that might look a bit more like a distant relative rather then your mirror image. The next step is assigning skill bills (the currency that the game uses to attain attribute points) to get your character’s march to soccer greatness underway. Skill points can be assigned to any of five categories including shot accuracy, tricks, and tackling just to name a few. After customization and assigning skills is complete you’ll be launched into the meat of the game, the career mode.
Career mode is where most gamers will be spending the bulk of their time. Your team travels to different locales spread across the globe in an effort to defeat the reigning football champs of the region. Each locale features three game types to be played: Kick About, Upgrade Squad, and Rule the Street. Kick About is your standard single game against the area’s finest in an effort to earn skill bills and reputation points to enhance your team’s standing. Upgrade Squad is basically just a roundabout way of improving your team without going through the hassle of skill bills, if you beat the player’s team then he’s automatically added to your roster of selectable players. Rule the Street is a tournament style of play where you are charged with working your way through the ranks of soccer greatness, once you’ve ruled the competition new locations will be opened up
