The Square rules. I had to carry Snuggly out of there in a drunken stupor when he was 16, after he collapsed in the lap of a fat Irishman.

Cheer up, at least you've got The Square!

In the vast majority of crappy towns (like Cheshunt where I gew up), there is nowhere for teenagers to go except townie pubs to get bottled, the kebab shop or the park to get wasted.

We used to dream of somewhere like the Square where you could actually hang out without being hassled by townies. And hear actual live music that wasn't a karaoke night full of drunk housewives wearing Kappa tracksuits.

Admittedly, Harlow generally is a hellhole I'd rather never set foot in again, but at least it's got something that sets it apart from most of the places on the ChavTown list.

And following on from Goaty again, there are some decent areas here. I think I'm lucky that I live in a nice area. Not rich, just nice people, which makes it worth living there, and there is still a small sense of community spirit.

Think you've been playing too much Mercenaries...

Yeah, typical Harlow thinking. Knock down the college that Mark Knoppfler went to, then build a spaccer-housing ...thing (what the hell is it, it's like a circle of plastic flats with security fencing around it - Big Brother house?) in it's place. Same thing is happening to the field along the main road from the town. It's got 3 football pitches on it, where I spent many a Summer playing football and flying kites. Now they're building a sports centre on it. Idiots. Luckily the construction route feeds from the town all the way down to the train station, so any possible thought of escaping by car or rail has been eradicated. Nice one.

Bishopsfield is worse.
Imagine a semi-circle, split into two levels. The top level is a crescent, fair enough. But the lower level is a car-park with alleys coming off like arms. Down these alleys are houses with no windows on the front, just brick alleyways with doors and the looming dark subterranean car-park at one end.
And 9 houses have "Support your Essex Outlaws" stickers on the doors, with pictures of a hand holding a smoking gun facing you.

It's quite possibly the dirtiest, foulest estate I've ever seen. And if you're lucky enough to not step in pittbull excrement down these alleyways with no windows, chances are you'll stand on a needle.

Vile

I was reading the thing posted in the original thread and the author said that this area was often nicknamed "The Bronx"

Oh dear.

What I find sad is that amidst the vast oceans of illiterate chimpanzees there are small islands of decent.
It just doesn't make any sense.
The areas that I deliver to are not too bad - Woodcroft is definitely one of the nicer places - and having done this walk for 4 months now I've gotten to know the people.
They stop and chat, I usually take an old lady's milk in for her etc.

Yet you go and do Bishopsfield/Moorfield/Brockles Mead and it's like somebody dropped a mongbomb on the area.
Slobbering, unemployed simians that stare as you walk up their path. Moorfield especially, they stand at the kitchen window - fag frozen in maw - and watch like they've never seen a postman before before screeching at little Liam to "Git darn those fakkin' stairs naaaar".

Places I have done that are ok:
Woodcroft, Willlowfield, Green Hills, Freshwaters/The Drive/Lavender Close, Katherines, Sumners, Old Harlow
Places I have done that suck balls:
Moorfield, Bishopsfield, Brockles Mead, Millwards, Wedhey, Jerounds, Cannonsbrook, Northbrooks, Occasio House
Harlow is 95% scum, and that seeps into the 5% decent and gives it all a bad name.

If you need to know what Harlow is like?
They knocked down Harlow College West and built special housing for teenagers with nowhere to go.
I delivered there once and refused to again. Holes kicked in the walls, "garage" music shaking the walls (at 8am), badly made posters for MC Stabby at "Da Pub dis Friday" and slack-jawed mongaloid teens looking at you like they're trying to work out incredibly hard sums.

I'd like to gather up my friends and family and napalm this shitpit from orbit, using an M16 for any cockroach lucky enough to crawl out afterwards
