LEE EVANS STARS IN ITV1 DRAMA ADAPTATION OF H G WELLS’ THE HISTORY OF MR POLLY

The History of Mr Polly tells the bitter sweet story of an ordinary man with a big heart and big dreams who finally risks everything for a chance at happiness.

Set in Kent in 1910, Alfred Polly (Lee Evans) is the owner of a bankrupt Gentleman’s Outfitters, trapped in a joyless marriage to wife Miriam (Anne-Marie Duff). Polly has towed the conventional line, married a woman he doesn’t love and gone into a business he neither likes nor understands. Somehow life has passed him by and he’s desperate for a way out.

Determined to make no more mistakes, Polly tries to end it all. But in a spectacular twist of fate, his incendiary suicide attempt fails. Polly’s convinced it’s a sign. Leaving his wife and life behind, he sets out on the open road to see where freedom leads.

Polly eventually stumbles upon an idyllic waterside inn, run by delightful landlady Nancy (Julie Graham) and starts a new life. It seems at last all would be perfect for Polly but as he knows only too well, nothing’s ever as good as it seems. Polly faces his greatest challenge yet in the form of local thug Jim who demands that Polly clears off. Can Polly muster the courage to fight for his chance at happiness or will he go back to his old life? Polly knows the latter isn’t an option….

Executive producer, Michele Buck said: “The History of Mr Polly is a beautiful tale about following your dreams and how you can alter the course of your life if you are brave enough to make the changes.”

Damien Timmer, executive producer added: “Adrian has done a fantastic job at adapting this classic story for a modern TV audience and Lee Evans is just delightful as Mr Polly.”

Based on a book by HG Wells, The History of Mr Polly is a 120 minute drama to be screened on ITV1 later this year. It is written by Adrian Hodges (Lorna Doone, Charles II: The Power & the Passion), produced by Katherine Lannon (The Secret Life of Mrs Beeton) and directed by Gillies MacKinnon (Hideous Kinky, Gunpowder, Treason & Plot, Regeneration, Small Faces).

Granada International holds worldwide distribution rights.

You guessed it, I only know because I'm a fan, but I'm confused, it was meant to be an "Autumn Drama" but nothing... Unless they're saving it for next year, now...?

Edit: It's for Boxing day :D

I think it will be utter sh*t. Lee Evans was an average comedian at bes**t anyway.

Well, at least that means I didn't miss it, as I have a fair few programmes over the Christmas period...

The Hamster, Lee Evans and a nerdy guy who appeared in a video on big screens at the Reading Festival swearing a lot? I'd totally be watching that if I wasn't going to see Iron Maiden on Friday! X^D

Right, (this) Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, Lee Evans is on there and should talk about The History of Mr Polly.

Seems a good line up of guest:
"A mix of music and celebrity chat with Jonathan Ross. He is joined by Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond, comedian and actor Lee Evans and actress Liz Smith. There's music from G4 and ex-Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker."

It's a bit sudden, I mean, they announced that they were filming on October 26th, I thought it'd take longer than (just about) two full months.

Well, there's something to watch when I've spent a couple of days stuffing my face with festive food, Lee Evans being an Edwardian! Something to look forward to!
