With all the success Microsoft has had, in almost dominating the PC industry it seemed only a matter of time before they realised the potential and money to be made in the console industry … and now, finally they have, in the form of the X-Box. Rumours had been flying around for months over the expected announcement of the X-Box, yet Microsoft denied them at every opportunity. Now the rumours have finally been confirmed, this is where the excitement and stipulation really begins. The possibilities for this new project seem endless, with all the resources Microsoft have available to them. The specs of the X-Box are in the realms of a pretty damn good PC. With a 600Mhz CPU, nVidia graphics accelerator running at 300Mhz, 8Gb hard drive, 64MB Ram, and a four speed DVD Drive, the only thing that seems to be separating the X-Box from a PC is that the X-Box is designed specifically for games. One glance over the string of impressive titles released on the PC (a machine deigned with more work-related jobs in mind) and you will start to realise just how much of an impact the X-Box could make on the games industry. With the unprecedented 8Gb hard drive the X-Box comes equipped with, along with a high-speed internet connection, console gamers could soon be realising the joys of patches, and how much more they can add to, and improve the games. Not only that, but what is stopping companies from designing actual software for this machine? It seems as if the gates have been flung open to any companies with the imagination and ability to produce software of any kind, and bring it to the non-PC owning world.
Another note worthy point likely to delight games manufacturers, is due to the operating system of the X-Box (Windows and DirectX-based) the porting over of PC games will be seamless, and hassle free.
The X-Box seems to have everything going for it and as long as Microsoft manage to keep the price tag reasonably low on this monster console, it looks as though no-one can stand in the way of the X-Box taking the world by storm. Just as long as Microsoft aren’t pressured into rushing the release of the X-Box (Autumn 2001 world-wide release – enough time?) then Microsoft are looking likely to add the console market to their list of dominations.
