Whenever I get to the part where you're standing on the train (The very beginning) my monitor switches off!

should I re-install it? Any other ideas?

What's your refresh rate set as?

If it's high, try lowering it.

it's only on 60Hz, it's not like the screen goes black - it goes into standby mode.

Wait for the patch. This could be part of all the audio issues and how the memory is incorrectly used causing leakage.

Check the link from the Official Half Life 2 thread further down posted by Scope a page or so back. Nearly everyone is having massive problems.

I had sound problems on my Audigy 2, however my onboard sound seems to work fine.

I've had issues as well. I have to say, I'm very disappointed in the release quality. A brilliant game is being tarnished by this.

Check the Steam forum, unbelievable amount of people just not playing it until they fix it, me included.

Apparently it takes around 10 minutes to extract the audio files which the game runs on the fly. This looks like the cause if the problem. The first two hours were unbelievable, the game is awesome, the stuttering is a joke though.

Hopefully they will fix it this week.

I re-installed it, now it says 'cannot find background01.something'
I am going to re-install steam now!
All this just to play a game - they better not do this for HL3!!!!
