Just flicking through the channels and caught the end of Newsnight - the bit when they do the headlines for tomorrows papers. One of them had in big letters "Computer Tax", and the presenter said something about the Government replacing TV licenses with a new tax on owning a computer. Is this true? I'll probably have to buy a paper tomorrow now, instead of getting news that isn't a day old off the internet.

I suspect its a bit of sensationalism. A paper was published on the future of the BBC today (well yesterday now), that suggests that TV licenses should remain for another 10 years at least. So I dont think you need panic yet.

Possibly what they are referring to is what happens when the UK goes fully digital (2012 is the deadline I think?). The eventual aim for the BBC is that all programmes be available online on demand. Its going to make the TV license an ineffective way of funding the BBC if everybody thinks they can dump their TV and just watch online. So if you want to apply the tax to something else, what is there? Computers...

Guessing anyway, since dunno what the headline refers to (yet). :)

As people always say. If this government could take our assholes they would. Taxing a computer? WTF!
