I'm surprised that the subject of Lebanon and what's been happening there hasn't come up here yet...

Superted was great. In fact, I've dressed up as Superted on more occasions than I care to remember.

I know a chap on irc from Lebanon. He seems to live a pretty normal life, you could have an in-depth conversation with him about the merits of Superted if you so wished (you'd be suprised how often this comes up).

Some of the more extreme "America = BAD!" brigade are hinting that the assassination was the work of the CIA and was done in order to demonise Syria. Of course, they don't have anything as trifling as "evidence", but who needs facts when one has paranoia to sustain?

Hey, millions are wasted every year on building and maintaining nuclear weapons. I want to see at least something for my tax sterling. It only takes the turn of a key.

I think we should invade. Things were hunky dory until we left. Plus, Beirut was pretty great according to friends who lived there are one point, pre-civil war.

I think they harbour WMD and terrorist ideas on our castles, womenfolk and livestock.

I'm not as familiar with the situation in the Lebanon as I should be; to be honest, I still think of it as an enormous warzone. As does (I would guess) anyone who grew up in the 80's. Whenever the Lebanon or Beirut in particular was mentioned on the news, we were treated to views of what looked like a sunny building site with extra rubble...

Anyhoo, as near as I can tell the country is starting to re-establish itself and it's own national identity after years of being used as a proxy warzone by Syria and Israel. Israel (as far as I know) are fine with this (apart, of course, from the occasional shelling of Palestinian militant groups...). Syria however seem to be reluctant to surrender their influence on the country, and that seems to be the crux of the current situation. It certainly seems to be what cost the former PM his life.

I'd be surprised if Syria continue to maintain their claims to Lebanese rule. If for no other reason than they're currently on the US Hate list, and need to avoid acting in as imperial a manner as the US are accused of.

I'm not all up on typing out paragraphs expressing my views, to be honest. It's too late, and I normally need something to prompt me to write my views/what I think...

I was just surpsrised it still hasn't come up..
