As I said, start with 512mb and if the message persists then go up to 768mb. Also try dropping the AGP Aperture size in the BIOS. If it is 256 (which isn't needed) then drop it to 128mb and if it is 128mb drop it to 64mb. All this is a system allocated memory that will be used when the onboard graphics card memory reaches its limit. This isn't a variable so in effect you are allocating 'x'mb of memory before you even run anything, it will use it regardless.

Also edit your system services to turn stuff off. You can save up to 40-50mb of RAM on idle processes. Virtual memory is a bit of a shat subsitute for RAM.

Some of the files I use at work run 3DMax up to a 1.3GB footprint. Given that my workstation has 512MB RAM, using your figures I would completely run out of memory before my file gets loaded. If he is getting "Need to resize the VM, please wait a moment" messages then clearly his apps are consuming a lot of virtual memory, probably at least 512MB. With the information we were given the recommendation of a pagefile of less than a gigabyte at the absolute minimum is, well, not recommended.

2048mb is ridiculous, has no effect at all and just prolongs the load in and out the Pagefile.

768mb at the most for the minium and maximum values. 512mb ideally. You want both the minimum and maximum to be the same to stop it from becoming fragmented. Set the page file to 0, restart, run disk defrag, restart and then set the minmum and maximum values to 512mb and see how you go.

Run fewer applications, install more memory or set your virtual memory size to a high, static amount. Seeing as the latter is the only option that doesn't negatively affect either the usage of your computer or the fatness of your wallet, do the following assuming you're running Windows 2000 or Windows XP (if you're running a version of Windows other than these, the options might be vaguelly similar):

* Right-click -> Properties on "My Computer" on your desktop (or in your Start Menu)

* Select the Advanced tab in the dialog that appears, then click on the Settings button in the Performance section.

* Select the Advanced tab in the next dialog, and click the Change button in the Virtual Memory section.

* Click on the Custom Size radio button in the middle of the Virtual Memory dialog that appears. In the Initial Size/Maximum Size textboxes nearby, enter a large number of megabytes. 2048 (2GB) should do it - enter the same value into each box (entering the same value into each forces the pagefile to be that size, which stops Windows constantly reassessing how big your pagefile should be - this theoretically means a faster computer under load). Note that this assumes you have 2GB free on your C drive - if you don't you can either enter a smaller number than 2048, select a different drive for the pagefile in the list at the top of the dialog or preferably buy a bigger hard drive :0)

* OK all of those changes.
