Ok, bit of a major problem here.

This morning I installed 521MB RAM (Crucial brand) giving my system a total of 768MB RAM making things rather speedy. The trouble is, my sound didn’t work. After looking round I discovered that somehow my PC had failed to detect my soundcard (a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 EAX), which meant I had no way of re-installing the drivers to see if that would clear it up.

Anyway, I decided to swap my soundcard round into a vacant PCI slot and re-install the whole thing, and it worked. My card was detected, the drivers successfully installed and by all accounts, everything was as it should be, apart from the fact I still have no sound.

I don’t know what’s going on, volume is up, no conflicts detected, Speakers in full working order, the soundcard has been selected as the default, I’ve installed all the updates that have been released for the card, I even heard a bit of sound after restarting from the re-install, as far as the PC is concerned, there isn’t any problem, yet I still have no sound.

I can hear static on my speakers if I turn them way up, but no sound. Could it be the RAM? Did it somehow screw up my PC or is my soundcard just old and knackered? I don’t know, which is why I’m asking here. Any help would be appreciated, as sound is a very important part of my PC.

Ah, think I got it. Took the new RAM out in case that was the cause, replaced it with my old RAM stick, and then did the old re-install of souncard drivers. Seems to be working fine now, panic attack over.

I know these things are obvious, but make sure nothing is muted, and that all the speaker cables are plugged into the right places.

Try the speakers on another PC if you can to rule them out as the cause of the problem.
