This is yet another re-write of a superhero origin though. Barry Allen's Flash was hit by lightning while working in a lab and the mix of the lightning and chemicals gave him super speed. In Smallville world, however, he's a kid that just got hit by lightning and that's it. At least they didn't connect it to Kryptonite for a change.
And, how they still milk the references.
First it was the fake IDs "Jay Garret? Barry Allen? Wally West?" Jay Garret was the original Flash from the early days of comics and Wally West is Barry Allen's successor (after being Kid Flash, a sidekick to Barry's Flash, until Barry Allen dies).
Then it was "Let's see if you're faster than a speeding bullet." Had to crowbar that one in, didn't they?
Lastly, the parting shot was "Maybe we could form some sort of club, or League." Referring to the Justice League.
Still, it's all good and the stories still keep me watching. Can't think they have too many series left though before they finish...
As for references and subtleties - I think they're great. Smaller things like the emphasis on the primary colours - red, yellow, blue - in costume and set design are also class.
