Newcastle United is a team that fail to impress me. Bobby Robson’s in charge after Ruud Gullit departed, and I have to say he is one of the most respected managers in the world, having great success at England and more recently the amazing Barcelona – he has been their best manager I am sure. At an age of around 70, I can’t believe how well he is getting on, but I’d like to see the Magpies invest in a few more players in order to push for something next season. I remember when they were in Europe all those years back, and more recently when they were chasing Manchester United for the Premiership title with Kevin Keegan at the reigns, but these past few seasons haven’t really gotten them anywhere – they did do well last season in the cup, but the league has produced many unconvincing results, and a final league position that really doesn’t make supporters happy!

11th. At least they stayed up of course, but if you’re a Newcastle fan I am sure that you’d be happier with players that can perform well than a stadium that holds the second highest capacity in the Premiership! Newcastle’s Alan Shearer is probably their greatest player, but this season he has been terribly unlucky with injury that has kept him out of the game for practically the whole campaign. 14 wins, 9 draws and 15 defeats, have rewarded a 51 point, 11th place behind Southampton, -6 goal difference and a perfect opportunity to do better than last season!

Carl Cort has managed to become their most likely source of goals, and he and Stephen Glass managed to put a couple past Aston Villa yesterday, helped along by Villa’s Delaney to achieve a good ending result of 3-0, despite a sending off or two. A couple of signings, a strengthening in the defence and offence will do the trick I feel, and a 7th place or higher should be a realistic target for next year I think. Shay Given’s a great keeper though.

Let's hope Tyneside will be cheering again!

With their huge, loyal fan base, Newcastle could (and perhaps should) be the UK's premier team - ahead of United. The trouble with Newcastle is that they are not a well run club (and have not been for many years). If they could get the right people at the helm their potential is unlimited.

Newcastle are now the North Easts second team behind Sunderland and I don`t see it changing. They have too many foreigners and others signed by different managers and their best players are all thirty or over. Sunderland have players who still have big transfer values with Phillips being worth £20m and they sign young quality players who have years to offer to their club.Their stadium is second only to Man Utd`s and with the potential to increase the capacity to 68,000 they could become Englands third club ahead of Leeds and Liverpool. Sunderland have finished ahead of Newcastle both seasons since returning to the premiership and I don`t see it changeing next year.
