Does it hurt my laptop to hibernate it instead of shutting down? I don't do that, but it would save a lot of time starting up.

i know that on windows xp everytime you hibernate it, it makes a fragmented unmovable file that can only be moved in a boot time defrag whice windows defrag dosent support, so everytime you do that you will probably have 1 more unmovable fragmented file

As I understand it it's actually a lot quicker to hibernate/unhibernate than it is to shutdown/startup a PC.

It should be fine although every 5 hibernations or so a re-boot might be a good idea to "refresh" it. I once worked in an IT department where some guy had been running his PC for about 6 months and not once had he properly re-booted it, it was acting really strangely by this time...

But, no - it shouldn't hurt it.

Hibernating would make probably make it a lot slower, before you put it into hibernate it has to transfer a lot of data from the ram to the hard drive, then when you bring it out it has to take the data from the hard drive then put it back onto the ram.
