How can I take a still of an .avi or .mpeg and use it as an image? Do I need special software or will Windows Media Player or Moviemaker Work?
Thanks very much.

Well it does - just go into options in whatever you're using to play it (WMP for example) and turn hardware acceleration down til it's off.
Then screenshotting will work. Remember to turn it back up though.
