This has become quite abundant in the last year or so. Heaps of praise been piled on films just because they're french, chinese or whatever. Some reviewers are seemingly inclined to give high praising reviews to crap.

A good example of this is sympathy for Mr Vengeance. I've seen it and it isn't that good. Sure its ok but its hardly spectacular. So why does it get 4 stars? This was a review in my telly guide, (tv choice!) when the film was on sky movies. If you read a more professional review on nixflix, they give it 2/5 or something. Saying that like so many korean films, (Oldboy being an exception) it is simply a film for the sake of being a film. Directors in Korea seem to detach themselves from a film and never incorporate any passion into their work. Which is surely what movie making is all about? I doubt this would have scored 4 stars if it was a british or american movie, it would have been seen as the satisfactory movie that it is. Not something that its not just because it is foreign.

This is not to say that all reviews are unjust. Foreign movies such as the motorcycle diaries, hero and the return have been hailed deservedly. Though they are only a choice few which have broken into more mainstream cinema. Which is a great thing. It really is nice to see our cinemas filled with more cultural films from around the world. Which in general are far better than alot of the flavour of the month movies that plague our cinemas.

So my main point is that some reviewers turn all misty eyed when they see a foreign movie and overpraise it because of that fact. It makes you wonder how many foreign masterpieces would have faired had they been in the english language. Alot of people say that Amelie would have failed had it not been french. Just something to think about...

The only foreign movie I've ever managed to watch from start to finish was the original "Ring". Way better than the lame American remake.

Takeshi's: Dead or Alive ranks as one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

and that was billed as 'Asian movie of the year' or something.

Utter, utter to$$.

Try Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War. Also, Ong-Bak is supposed to be a fantastic, realisic martial arts movie too. I've got it in the house, and from what I've seen so far from the wirework free fight sequences, it's anything but passionless.

Also I find it weird you complaining about the overpraisal of foreign movies, when the majority of your posts are your opinions of the latest Japanese horror to be released (which IMHO are pretty soulless affairs featuring creepy kids), whilst critizicing the (admittedly) poor state of mainstream American horror (There's some pretty cool looking indy flicks around and upcoming)

TV Choice are hardly the most reputable reviewers around.

People do tend to get a superiority complex though when they watch foreign films. Infact I'd say there's a few people on these very forums that think they're 'cool' because they watch foreign films.

Naming no names...

Yeah, but critics like English films I don't like.
