There will soon come a time when Sony will say ‘right, we are ready for the internet’ They have already planned for it, and no doubt looked into cost and availability of modems to do the job properly. Many people are awaiting this moment with baited breath, awaiting the time that they can start using their esteemed PS2 against people all over the world, just as those who currently own a Dreamcast are doing now.

Why, then, with so much at stake, have Sony decided to go for Broadband only? Perhaps it’s a ruse, and they will bring out a 56k model as well, with a cry of ‘surprise’ from their offices as people whoop with glee at the ability to get on the net from the comfort of the living room. If Broadband is the way forward for Sony, they will be waiting at least another 5 years for a decent sized userbase in the UK before it’s worth starting to sell their modems. BT are slow at getting their networks ready and the installation of the few areas in England that have access has been riddled with problems.

So is it worth keeping the few happy at the sacrifice of everyone else? Well, it would mean that it would keep some owners happy, owners who have been waiting a long time for online access and would get the best net connection on a console to date, but so many people would be angry at not being given the choice to get online or even being able to afford the extortionate costs that it involves. But as I mentioned, Sony must already know this and it wouldn’t surprise me if they have an alternative ready for all of us poor souls that wait in hope.

From what has been said at E3 there will be a modem released in teh autumn for the PS2. This will in fact not a=only have broadband capabilities, but will also be a 56k modem that will be used through the telephone line. This makes short term access for those who cannot recieve or afford a broadband connection to go online. When the broadband technology becomes more widely available and cheaper, the same adapter can be used as the one used for the 56k access. This is a wise move by sony as everyone can buy the adapter for either the 56k access or the future of broadband. This adapter is also expected to be approximatley £40 which is very affordable. Another important announcement is that this adapter can be used with your current ISP meaning you dont have to sign up for the specific PS2 isp being supplied by cisco (which would probably be relatively expensive. Sony have signed up AOL, Netscape and have the use of real player for the online capabilities. These add up to a cheap and easy way to access the internet throught the PS2

From the E3 report at http://ps2.ign.com ...

"The PS2 Network Adaptor is a rectangular black component that fits on the back of the HDD and enables hybrid 56k analog modem capabilities, plus Ethernet capabilities for broadband usage. The Network Adaptor will sell for a MSRP of $39."
