I'm not sure I've got this in the right place but.

I've just bought an external hard drive enclosure in the hopes that I would be able to boot from my spare hard drive but I have had no success in everything that I try.

I have booted from a USB pen drive before so I know I can boot from a USB device.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I think it will, though I'm not entirely sure. I had WinXp installed on 2 HDs once, though they were both internal and so had the same priority. I had to edit the boot.ini file to give two options; one pointing to the OS on one drive, and another to the second one.

However, this shouldn't really apply because USB HDs (or internal ones fitted into an external enclosure) aren't native to the motherboard, so the BIOS should boot the internal HD first automatically.

Or... maybe it'll work fine. At startup, whack the setup button (one of the F keys) and it'll take you to the BIOS screen. From tehre you'll be able to alter your boot-up priority sequence; usually the floppy is first, CD-ROM 2nd, HD third.... if the USB option is there, change that to first so it'll boot from the USB HD instead.

Maybe.

I have win 2K installed on the external drive and XP installed on the internal one. You think that having two OS trying to start at once will cause problems?

Yeah you can. Just have to make the thing bootable first, much like you did with the USB drive.

Edit: By your post, do you mean another drive with the OS on it? Because while you can boot from USB, BIOS also detects the internal drive from startup, which can cause problems.

If the connection is USB - then you should just use the same procedure from booting from a USB Device.

Try messing around with the BIOS - I have never had to boot from an external hard drive before, so I cannot be of much help.
