Basically, for the multimedia module on my course at uni, I need to use my computer as a local server. So the tutor tells everyone to get XP Pro so that we can all install a componant you only get with Pro - I'm pretty sure it's called ISS...something or other... we need it to run VBScript or Javascript...and something to do with SQL...I DON'T KNOW I'M STILL LEARNING, GOD!. So anyway, I don't want to install a new OS just for one componant so I was wondering if it's possible to download whatever it is I need from Microsoft...?
Does anybody have a clue what I'm babbling on about? Because I don't :(
PHP is a much cleaner language (in my opinion).
But there is no reason to specifically use IIS rather than Apache unless you need a MS only server-side language such as ASP (though even this can be configured through Apache).

Yeah that sounds about right, I'll look into it, thanks.

Yeah, the tutor wants us to install something that allows us to modify a database on a server so that link may be what I need.
Thanks!
And yes, SQL does stand for Structured Query Language if that counts for anything....!
Get apache.
Apache is god!
(+ You don't need to change operating systems, but you can always use Linux!)

There's quite a few docs on the internet about it.
Although..... ISS is Windows's version of a webserver, I have absolutely no idea on how to set it up though sorry.
SQL stands for Structured Query Language (I think?), but I guess your teacher wants you to install something like MySQL which is a database thing (not sure what you would call them? database server that runs in a webserver?), it allows you to create and modify databases through web applications and what not. It's pretty cool stuff.
