It's between:
Plusnet
Pipex
Wanadoo
BT
Choose one and a reason please.
I'm getting 1Mbp/s speed.
I need a router (Netgear DG834G to be exact) because I have the PC, Xbox and PS2 connected. It also has wireless for the lappy when I need it.
Not everyone needs such a device, hence why a single port USB modem will do the job just fine.
But it's a quick way online without any hassle.

You get a free modem?
Sure? If so I'll go with them..

Damn right. I've had enough of their crap on dial up.
BT will tighten their cap shortly to something like 15Gb - still a lot, but can easily be broken. overall, BT have always been a good service. I was with them before I moved to Pipex, never had a problem with them.
Personally, I'd recommend Pipex. They're cheaper than BT, you get a free modem AND, you are not tied into a 12-Month contract (although if you leave before 12 Months is up, you have to pay the connection fee, about £58. Fair deal though). This is one of the selling points for me as the place I'm living now is only on a 6-month letting agreement and i never planned on staying longer than that.
At the end of the day though, it's up to you and your Family. BT do actually provide a great service, but you are tied in for a year, they are capped and they do cost more than the alternatives. Pipex are exactly the same (they use BT's line after all), yet they are cheaper, uncapped and untied.
Whoever you go for, just make sure it isn't AOL.
