Using Outlook Express, selecting (highlight, not double click) an email from the list will display the email in the panel below, this is the panel talked about when referring to the preview pane isn't it?

If so, under Tools and Options..., selecting the Read tab shows a checkbox for Automatically download message when viewing in the Preview Pane. This is unchecked, but the preview pane still appears to be showing the email. Isn't this what is classed as a security risk, or am I thinking of something else referring to the preview pane?

Thanks.

Yep, but usually a patch is released very quickly or the antivirus picks up the attack straight away.

Still best to turn it off though, it was worse before MS disabled images from being downloaded as that was just confirming that your email address was valid.

I've always thought Outlook Express downloaded the email as normal, but only thought about this more-so when noticing the available option. I tried selecting it, yet nothing appeared to change (so I've de-selected it again).

I must be confusing this option with read all messages in plain text, which I guess prevents downloading other files from within an HTML formatted email, though I was sure that the term preview pane was mentioned somewhere regarding security issues.

UPDATE:

I'm so bad at this sort of thing, spending ages thinking / worrying about a particular thing, then giving up and asking for a little help, then 2 minutes later it slaps me in the face.

I remember now that the preview pane was apparently a method for people to spread worms when Outlook Express viewed the email within it. The option to disable this was under the View menu and selecting Layout .... It was apparently recommended that the View preview pane option was deselected.

Though, looking in to that option now, the whole section is greyed out, so I can only assume Microsoft disabled the whole thing?

I'm not sure if that option is applicable to email anymore? Doesn't OE download the messages regardless when it checks a mailbox?

I think it might be only applicable to newsgroups now as with them you'd only usually download message headers as opposed to the entire message.
