Radio 1 DJ Alan Freeman has died at the age of 79. He had been pretty ill for a while and in a retirement home.
Alan will be best remembered for his catch-phrases such as "Not Arf" and "Alright pop pickers?" as well as one of the first truly popular Radio 1 shows, Pick of the Pops. He will also be remembered for inspiring the Harry Enfield character Dave Nice.
It's a pity that Radio 1 hasn't paid him too much of a tribute though, short of a spot on the news. They seem quick to bury their founding DJs in the past, when the popularity of them at the time ensured Radio 1's future success.
