If your playing a fps you get so much more control from a mouse and keyboard. but if i was going to use a gamepad to play them i would need a n64 controller as in my opition it is the best console type controller for fps games. Goldeneye the ultimate console fps was pretty easy to control but i would have given my best friends left arm for a mouse and keyboard to play it with. (not my own arm as games are hard to play with one arm and i don't want to ruin my fun)
This in mind i did play a large part of half life 2 with a gaming glove called the P5 but it works like a mouse and i just happened to get it at the same time as half life 2 so i had to try it out. But i was far better with my mouse course this is cause i have had years of playing with a mouse and only a few hours with my P5.
Keyboard and Mouse are waaaaay better for strategy, FPS and 3rd person shooters purely because they are a hell of a lot more precise. When I play my Xbox for the odd time here and there I find it really difficult to adapt a style with the control pad for shooting games as I am so used to playing with Mouse and Keyboard.
Driving and fighting games aside I really can't see why you would want to use a control pad.

One tap on the left one, rotate left.
One tap on the right, rotate right.
Clap, jump.
easy.
I was joking BTW, and garins explained the point very well. :D

Its technically easy to offer support for gamepads, however the playing experience with gamepads compared to mouse/keyboard is quite different. If they start supporting gamepads then they have to start tuning the game for gamepad players. You can see that many PC FPS which appear on consoles have been adapted because of the controls. Ultimately its alot of work for small benefit.

I see your point but if you are trying to use conga drums to half life, then how you made it to the shops and back is a wonder. point is all games on pc can be joypad compatible so why not do it???

They exist, but how many gamers would use them in a title like hl2? Valve would have had to write extra (admittedly small) code to utilisethem.
Unfortunatly, joypads are just not a commonly used control method on the pc, where the mouse and keyboard combo gives far better control. It's what the majority of pc gamers have been used too since the first domm.
I'f you've got broadband, I suggest jumping into Deathmatch Classic and playing that until you get to grips with the method. It's lighning fast, so it'll not take you too long.
as far as looking and shooting goes using a mouse is far better its the moving, change weapon, flash light, zoom ect ect, that i cant get used to.
i know for you hardcore out there this will be second nature but if joypads are there why not give us an option to bloody use them??????

But then you're opening a massive can of worms.
"tracker ball cannot be used with this product"
"steering wheels cannot be used in the vehicle sections of this product"
"atari joystick cannot be used with this product"
"donky conga drums cannot be used with this product"
"Sega bass reel fishing controller cannot be used with this product"
Where does the madness end?
