Find out what model it is and search on Google for it.

Unless you bought your DVD recorder in the last 3 or 4 months, it's highly unlikely that it will support dual layer discs.

I bought my sony a year ago, using the firmware from another drive it will write dual layer, you could try it.

Are you sure about that, cookie?

(a) I wouldn't think the hardware would support it, and (b) using the firmware from another drive sounds like a good way to trash your unit.

Yep, this works because alot of the drives on the market share the same inner workings, I know that a lot of Lite On and MSI drives have compatible firmware, I guess that they come off the same production lines.

With regard to dual layer DVD burners I guess the firmware simply activates the ability of the laser to focus onto two layers

Also i think Sony and Lite on are actually the same, Sony being rebranded lite on's.
