So I got some of those very attractive 5.1 Medusa Headphones from the good people at SR. I got them for my PC really, but I haven't got it yet, so I was looking around for a piece of equipment to try my new purchase out on.

There isn't a 5.1 device in the house would you believe, although it occured to me that the old xbox is. Some head scratching and manual reading later and I have a few questions. (Humour me I'm a 5.1 virgin)

These headphones came with their own amp and I have one of those advanced scart leads with the usual stereo output and optical out. After searching around on the net I found that 'XBOX AV Pack' which includes a meatier looking AV output cable and junction box which appears to have 6 outputs as well as the optical one. In my headphones manual is a diagram showing 6 outputs coming from a DVD player and going directly into the headphones amp.

Does this mean I can simply buy one of those AV Packs and attach 6 normal stereo jack plug cables to those 6 outputs on the 'AV Pack' xbox junction box, and the other end into the headphones amp, and achieve 5.1 surround, or do I need a separate decoder?

I'm finding it a tad confusing, especially after having a skin full last night. Feel free to laugh at my inability to grasp new technology.

A decoder is needed then. Im not sure if the xboxs nvidia mcpx chip actully decodes 5.1 as I have mine pluged in to a separate 5.1 amp. I have found some info saying this: Using technology licensed from dolby, the mcpx supports the decoding and encoding of dolby digital 5.1 sound streams. Im not sure at what level that decoding goes to thou.

I've not been able to try them properly yet, but they seem to fit well and are pretty comfortable. of course, the real test is when you wear them for an hour or more, so we'll see.

I tell you what though, they're bloody good value at 30 quid. I was chuffed to bits when I opened them this morning. Now all I need is my amazing PC delivering and I can disappear into my own little world.

Has the amp not got a decoder built in?
