There was a time when you could get away with releasing a DVD box set of a TV series and it would sell just like that. In fact, many early TV Box set releases were just that, the TV show and no extras, presented in slightly better than video format.

But now DVD recorders are cheap and digital tvs mean that anyone, even those without access to complicated computer software, can record a programme in crystal clear quality to watch over and over again on DVD.

This means that Box Sets have their work cut out for them. Any new series that comes out would need exclusive footage, a commentary from the directors and actors and some in depth behind the scenes features. Even so, with shows such as Dr Who it's now possible to head over the BBC3 and watch and record the show with commentary on, plus get all the behind the scenes info from the Confidential shows. In the digital age more and more TV shows are going down this route.

So what does this mean for the DVD box set? As everyone is forced to go digital and DVD recorders start taking over the houses of even those people who have so far avoided changing their aging VHS recorders, are they being made obsolete too? Or does the pretty packaging and a few exclusives that aren't on TV mean that they will still be a worthy purchase? Do TV Box sets have a future on DVD or can they find another trick to keep us buying them?

Tell you what, I'm downloading Season 1-5 of Futurama, and it says it'll be done in two days which is faster than the delivery time... Why bother?

I admit to being one of the people who just record TV shows, but if I really enjoy it, and get a chance to buy it I will. I'm not sure why, but I think that most of the time, just being able to get subtitles up whenever you want is the reason I bother buying them...
