Considering how great the GameCube and X-Box controllers are, they're not put together very well.
I've broken one Cube controller (you should see the dents in the wall where the left and right trigger buttons hit) and my s-type X-Box controller is cracked from stocking it off the steps leading into my room (my parents accused me of something I didn't do, it had nothing to do with the game I was playing, which makes a change)
In fact it's only my PS2 controllers, which have quite possibly taken the most abuse, that still work fine. They may be crap, but they're well put together crap.

My Xbox and Cube ones are fine. PS2 on the otherhand... mine rattle and they have bite marks in. Not my new one though as that would be silly.
My PS2 controllers don't take a huge battering but they are far easier to damage. I dropped one onto a carpeted floor and something inside snapped off and has been rattling around inside ever since. Dropped a GC one onto a wooden desk once and it was fine.

So THAT'S where I've been going wrong! I thought they were oddly shaped shot puts.
I'm sure they wern't made for throwing about.....
