Ok I know you've heard it all before but people are still calling Nintendo childish! So I'm going to say my opinion on the subject!

Nintendo’s fluffy image is one that exists only in the minds of certain people in the industry, not in real life, where research has proven that the majority of N64 owners are over 18.

Think of the N64’s earliest games. Blast Corps: not cute or kiddie. Pilotwings: far too in-depth and serene to appeal to children. Turok: hello, is that guy spasming on the floor while blood shoots from his neck? Wave Race appeals to the cool snowboarding culture. Shadows of the Empire: Many know Star Wars fans are mostly in the 20-40 year age bracket. Mario 64 could be described as cutesy or could be described as a piece of abstract art originating from a magic-mushroom fuelled orgy.

Nintendo’s kiddie image is heavily overrated and Playstations adult image is just the same. True Nintendo have been cautious with licensing very gory games but since when did gore stand for adult games? The mentality of being turned on by someone’s head falling off is heavily child like in origin. I find Turok 2’s cranial bore funny but only in the same way I found Evil dead 2 funny when I was 10. Pilotwings is a much more enjoyable adult game than Resident Evil ever was! Also Nintendo’s childish image sprouts from platform games whilst Playstation has games such as the Teletubbies or Tweenies games that are absent in Nintendo’s catalogue of games. Also Platform games are hard for people of my age so children are unlikely to enjoy it!

So are Nintendo childish? Only on the outside but delve deeper and you’ll find the opposite is more true!

Here’s to the future

Guru has an N64.

End of case.

And,at the end of the day:
Who cares?

People can say what they want about nintendo, sony, sega, x-box..doesnt matter. It's a thing I play games on when I'm bored.

There are more important things to spend your passion on Dringo.

Nintendo IS a child aimed console, but as the previous post states:
That is a good thing.

Nintendos kiddy image. Deserved?

Yes, I think so, and I think that they should be proud of it.

I for one, am very happy that Nintendo make games that appeal to both the very young, and older gamers. I think it's great that they have created these worlds for us, AND our children to enjoy.

I find that the majority of games that are considered 'kiddy' tend to be the 3D adventures, such as your Mario's, Donkey Kong's, and Banjo's. I find that this style of game is usually appealing to all ages.

When you play Super Mario 64 you are faced wit the challenge of finding 70 gold stars in order to defeat Bowser. This should be achieveable by someone relatively new to gaming, after some practise.

For those of us that have been playing games for a few decades now, like myself, getting those 70 stars won't be too much of a challenge, but it just so happens that there are a total of 120 stars to find in the game. Some of these are quite well hidden too!

The secret is not to aim your games at a single audience, but to try and make it span the ages. Be simple enough for a child to enjoy, yet deep enough to give the more experienced gamer a decent challenge.

Obviously there should be some games aimed at specific groups, such as survival horror aimed at older gamers, and those more tactical games, but there is no reason why a game should be aimed only at kids.

I've enjoyed playing Tiggers Honey Hunt. It's quite easy, but there are extras in there, like time challenges, and extra photographs to find. It's these little challenges that will keep the younger players coming back as they gain more experience, and, as they grow up, they'll slowly move on to being able to find all 120 stars, or play the 'hard' difficulty setting.

Also, if you grow up playing Nintendo, then you might just buy Nintendo for your own kids, there's nothing that would make me want to buy a PS2 or an XBox for my children, as the games just aren't there that would appeal to them.

i agree dring...

Nintendo have been producing high quality games for years and should not be judged on what age group they are aimed at! What would you rather play, mario 64 or some kind off cheap psx shooting game?i think that is enough said there...
