Computer's never cease to amaze me, you know...

To try and fix a persistant problem where my computer would randomly crash at the most irritating of times - I could barely go 5 minutes into a game of Football Manager 2005 - I decided to go on a I-know-what-I'm-doing, yeah, this-computer-stuff-is-a-piece-of-cake mode, to fix the problem myself.

And I found the problem, too! AND I fixed it aswell!! :o
(Not bad for a thick-as-a-bricky Carpenter, eh? ;D )

Anyway, upon doing this, I seem to have lost direct access to both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. The shortcuts have vanished from my desktop and, after having searched high-and-low, I cannot find anything on it the files of hidden (Windows) folders where I'd expect it to be...
It could just be me and I'm missing something. There are folders for each under 'Program Files' on C:/, but I can't see any InternetExplorer.exe, as an example.

I can still access it, however....
If I open up another window (My Computer, as an example), click on 'Favourites' at the top, 'BT Yahoo! Broadband' and then 'SpeedTouch', it then connect, the web pages comes up, and also from the top of the screen, I can access Outlook Express via 'Read Mail'. All the old messages are still there and anything.

So, if you feel you can help me, how do I go about getting the shortcuts back?
Where do you usually go to find them?
Do I need to find the program files first?

It might also be worth mentioning I have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 right now, also, yes.

When I "solved" the problem, I clicket the following:

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > 'System Information'

From there, I selected 'Software Enviroment' and then Windows Error Reporting, which gave me a list of things that were causing problems; a load of numbers I didn't understand and something about Windows Messenger (which I then deleted - or so, I thought....).

After that, I chose Dr Watson from the 'Tools' menu and could see a list of other 'Application Errors' to the bottom of the box - to which, I clicked 'Clear' and they were gone!
One was about BT Yahoo! Internet, another on something with Winamp and... I can't remember the other one.

Winamp works fine, as does the BT Yahoo! thing, but since then, Explorer and Outlook Express appear to be hiding.

This is probably a bit too much and long-winded for you people at this time of the year, but I'm hoping someone out there can help.

Thank you for your time and suggestions, in advance.
(I couldn't really care less, so long as I can access it, but I've had my intelectualy-challenged mum down my earhole for the last 24 hours you see! :S )

Yeah, for IE, you can go to C:\program files\Internet explorer and then make a shortcut of the IExplorer.exe and stick it on the desktop. I've uninstalled outlook, bu i imagine the same sort of procedure will be suitable.

From memory, Internet Explorer is IExplore.exe and Outlook Express is msimn.exe. Try doing a search for those files on your system, then just create shortcuts manually to the exe's.

I assume that their icons are gone from the top-left of the start menu?

Well, the easiest way of solving this, I guess, would be to reinstall.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs

On the left-hand side, click "Add/Remove Windows Components". De-select IE and Outlook Express, then click Next, follow the process through etc. Then, go back into Windows Components, select IE and Outlook Express, click Next, and go through again. That should have solved it. If not, download IE from microsoft.com (Which I believe also contains Outlook Express) and reinstall that.
