Currently on BT 1MB however they are capping as of January and I want a faster connection. I don't want to switch over to NTL phone as I am currently on BT. Any recommendations for an ISP with a 2/3MB download and a 512k upload speed?

Cheers!

To get faster than 2Mb you do need to be on a LLU exchange. http://www.samknows.com/broadband/images/custommaps/en_exchanges-250904.png to see a map of the exchanges and see that the area they cover is very small, only something like 200 odd exchanges have LLU and most are in big cities.

Yeah I was looking at Bulldog DSL 4MB with 400K upload but I know every little about them and the Line availability checker was down at the time. I live pretty close to the exchange (about 1 mile away) so I don’t think getting the faster speeds will be an issue.

I will contact Plus Net tonight when I get in as BT can go f**k themselves over charging for a capped line. A few game demos downloaded in one day can equal up to 2GB, then there is CS: Source that I play a fair bit.

ISPs for ADSL go up to 2Mb download and only 256K upload at the moment. If you are on a LLU exchange then Bulldog as well as a few others offer 4Mb with increased upload. One company is bringing 8Mb ADSL out for £39.99, but it is capped and it also doesnt guarantee 8Mb, you may sign up and only be able to get 4Mb.

Plusnet are pretty good but they are capped in a sense. If you download more than 150Gb a month for a couple of months, they will move you to a congested pipe, which means slower speeds.

The thing you will find is more and more ISPs will start capping, as BT are scrapping the old charging system and going to a usage charging system. In the past the ISP would pay BT £X amount each month for the line, quite alot really, about £14 for 512K line, £24 or so for 1Mb. But now BT are doing the lines very cheap, but they charge per Gb or whatever. So a low usage customer is very good for a ISP as say they charge £25 a month, that customer may only cost the ISP £10. Where as a high user who still pays £25 a month may cost the ISP £40. In the past the usage of a customer didnt matter as BT would charge the same.
