It's a funny old world, isn't it? People, as stupid as they are, worry about how they look. What will he/she/they/it think?! They shouldn't care. Sure you dress up to go out, to be sociable, to keep a certain standard, but to go round a friends house, or into a Shopping Centre?! Pah! I find that most kids nowadays are so alike in their personality, that the only thing that sets them apart is what they wear... which is, in fact, almost identical anyway! But people do want to be different. Stand out. Be noted. Given attention.

The people at UbiSoft and Digital Extremes have noted this. Busily at work with FarCry Instincts and Pariah, respectively, both games will offer the play the ability to create their own game-map! You can forget colouring in your own Mobile Phone Cover, or designing a tattoo, MAP building is the future.

I genuinely believe this. I think that as gaming consoles become more powerful and the standard Internet Connection speed raises into BroadBand territory, we'll see more and more developers, especially those with that certain 'magic', bring lots of customisation to the table. I can't wait to try and build 'Bahamas Gulch' (Tropical Blood Gulch) in FarCry. It'd be cool. You can have two bases, as usual. The paths can be there, but you could have it as one big island, as oppose to in a quarry-thing! Imagine swimming away with the flag underwater! Haha!

Customisation is what divides players. What sets them apart. When you join a random Matchmaking game in HALO 2, and when it starts after a few hours and you're into the game, you'll begin to take notice of that Red and White 'Vortex' logo that represents 'InsertGamertagHere' who's tearing up the opposition with his lethal Magnum/SMG combo. Your own logo is like an on-line signature. I like my logo, I think it's cool. I like the way I chose the colours, whether or not to include the second swirl. Sure, it's not designing your own from scratch, but it's a start.

I think this map building is just the start of User-Created Content. I'm talking Console Stuff, here, by the way. You 'I-made-a-map-on-CS-1000-years-ago' people can shove off to the PC forums! ;) Soon we could be seeing users create their own WWE Pay-Per-View design. Where the screens are, what colours the themes are, even the seating arrangments! You never know.

For me, the casual gamer, MAP making and on-line sharing is enough. At least for now. I'm happy to design a cool FarCry/Pariah map with some good conflict points, sniping positions and walk-ways. I'm sure my attitude will change, and when i'm playing my XBOX 3 version of Rainbow Six 5, I'll wonder how I ever lived without changing the weight and firing speed of my custom-designed gun! Still. I like what I see in FarCry Instincts and Pariah. Hopefully it's something HALO 3 will employ!

MAP making is a very exciting prospect for us Console gamers. It's been done before on consoles with TimeSplitters, but to share your Map-Online and play against your friends on it would be amazing. You could use the darkened short-cuts along the jungle ledge and laugh at your slow-learning friends! If you miss a MAP from another game, you can re-create it in your new game. It's all good fun, and will only add more last-ability to what, if played a lot on LIVE, will already be a great game!

Customisation is what I like about most new games. I probably spend more time doing up my character on Tiger Woods than I do actually playing golf.

It's a strange phenomena, but with the advent of online gaming it's becoming more and more important to differentiate yourself from the rest of the world. It would be excellent if you could map your face onto game characters, and make it look realistic, not just a flat 2D representation. You may already be able to do this, but I haven't come across it yet.
