Right.

I'm going away for a week and a day, and I want my PC to be downloading a few very, very large files (about 5 at 4,500.00 MB, with BitTorrent running @ around 10 kbps - for some reason. Anyway to speed it up?) while I'm gone.

But the electricity bill is huge, and I'd quite like to find out if there is a way to lower the power consumtion - there would be no programs running except BitTorrent. So I could probably slow the fans, turn down the CPU... But how? And is there anything else I should do?

Personally I'd suggest you point your mother in the direction of uswitch.com. £45 a month is excessive in my opinion (depends on your region of course).

(Genius)

No, seriously.

My bill - parent's combined, but hey, they don't even have a TV so... - is around £45 a month.

Which my mother is starting to complain about.

Cunning, very cunning.

Any way of finding out the exact ammount of electricity consumed by a household tool?

You could just turn off everything else in the house. tv's on standby are worse than most things. Just leave clocks, fridges and your computer plugged in.

We have 6 computers in my student house 3 on constantly and 3 for regular day useage. Our bill is about £120 for 3 months thats about £30 each for the 3 months. Not alot you will agree. Just turn eveything else off at the switch don't leave it plugged in.

Not sure this will haev helped you or not.

You could underclock your processor and get it to run at half speed or something. That would enable you to lower the voltage to the processor. You could disconnect all your optical and floppy drives, remove all but one stick of RAM etc.

Or just not bother since we aren't going to make much of a difference at all.

Er, using ABC, not bog-standard BT.

Try Cool&Quiet and Asus' Q-Fan if they're compatible with your setup (i.e. supported Asus mobo and support AMD chip ;) ).

They lower your CPU Voltage and the fan speed.
