i want to build a half decent website for our sports team, and want to know what you guys recommend as a free and relatively simple web site building tool preferably in the £0 pounds range. Hosting and that stuff doesn't matter i just want to build it.

thanks a lot. ashley

yeah ive used geocities before, main problem is that all the websites look pretty samey, and as i said hosting isn't an issue and so i don't need that for free of them.

If you want to be really flash, you could look at some kind of scripts to do fancy stuff with scores - work out league tables, fixture lists, etc. To start with though, I'd concentrate on the basics - you can't go far wrong with something like 1st Page 2000.

It'll get you a decent enough web site with not too much effort. Feel free to ask away in the forums if you get stuck.

If you want a pish easy way of doing it, I seem to remember Freeserve did a pretty decent free hosting and building thing.

Well. It was probably crap, but the web pages were decent and served their purpose. Easy to put pics and links and stuff too.

Try some of the following for free:

Notepad (if you're prepared to learn HTML/CSS/whatever)
1st Page 2000 - very good editor (prob the best free one I know of)
CoffeeCup - not used this for ages but used to be good

Or for money:
Dreamweaver MX/MX2004 - expensive but the best web design software around.

For a small website such as the one you talk about, start with 1st Page 2000 and if you need something more popular, then look at upgrading. Also, it will really help you to just spend a few hours learning HTML and CSS at W3Schools (http://www.w3schools.com).

For making your images, you'll probably find you've already got software that'll cover the basics. If not, I'm sure someone on here will recommend something.

Just PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not go down the route of using MS Word/Publisher/etc. They produce horrible looking websites that do not conform to any standards, take ages to load, and don't work properly in general.
