Marcus Stewart has done wonders for Ipswich Town this season. They are on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League, if not then definatley the UEFA cup. He has scored 21 goals this season and they have all been important.

Signed from Huddersfield whilst Ipswich were in Division One for £2.5 million which looks like a bargain now. He was having a poor start for Ipswich scoring just one in 10 games in Division One. I didn't think he could cut it in the Premiership, but he has proved me wrong big style.

It has been goal after goal. With my son supporting Ipswich I have had the chance to see Marcus Stewart perform and he is amazing. Great finishing, he has a great first touch. He has amazing aerial ability despite being quite a small bloke which troubles some of the centre backs.

He never would have dreamt of having any chance of playing for England, but this season has done nothing but help his push into Sven Goran Erikkson's plans for the next World Cup.

However the goals have dried up recently but he is still looking sharp around the box and when he gets one I'm sure the confidence will be back and he will finish the season in a flurry.

Will this be a one of season or will Marcus be able to consistently score 15+ goals a season. I'm not so sure, but then I said he wouldn't do well at all in the premiership, so who knows????

Although an Arsenal fan, I have always had a very healthy respect for Ipswich. They completely outplayed Arsenal to win the 1978 cup final under Bobby Robson. The same team also won the UEFA cup and very nearly the championship. The team of that era were superb. Eric Gates scored some fantastic goals. I remember one particular game when they beat Man Utd 6-0 at Portman Road - in the days when the league were using red and white panelled footballs !!.

The current team still have some way to go to match the Robson era but Ipswich thoroughly deserve their current league position and I hope results go their way this weekend and they clinch that third spot for the Champions League.

Being an Ipswich fan since I was a kid, what can I say? In that time, there have been the high points - FA and UEFA cup wins and promotions. And the low points - relegation, and being whomped by MU 9-0 a few seasons back. This has been a magnificent season. Everyone wrote us off as relegation candidates, and admittedly, even when I was being optimistic, I thought around mid table would be the best we could do. But we've hardly faltered all season. With a team that proves that you don't need big bucks to make an impression in the top flight.

When we sold David Johnson to Notts Forest, I was a bit concerned that our best players were going to start leaving the club, and we weren't going to make the next step up. But Marcus Stewart has been absolutely fantastic, as have most of the rest of the team. It's only a shame that Leeds and Liverpool have improved over the last couple of months of the season, or else we'd be looking at a definite Champions League spot. As it is, I guess we'll have to make do with the UEFA Cup ;-).

Being an Ipswich fan, it's not in my nature to be smug about our position in the league. We've done it through hard graft, flowing football, and not through great expense. But there is a certain amount of satisfaction after listening to numerous football phone ins, and fans of historically bigger clubs making comments like 'but we should be beating teams like Ipswich'. Rubbish. We've been in the top six pretty much all season. No team has a divine right to beat other teams, or to have a place in the Premiership. We've proven we've been up to the task this season, and I hope we can carry it on.

Phillips has had a bit of a goal drought though.

I agree with you. Stewart will score around twenty next season and is similar to Kevin Phillips in size and style. I would rate them both at 12 to £15 million but reckon Phillips is the better. It might be tougher for Stewart next term because the experts always say "once a team has worked the player out" its harder to score which was proved with Phillips.

He'll be as much of a success next year as he was this year. He'S a natural born goal scorer.
