Where can I find out more about my family history? I'm not a particularly nostalgic person, but it occured to me today that I don't actually know anything beyond my own parents. I've tried that National Arhives online website, and a few other sites, but nothing comes up. I've got a not very common surname, but it isn't unique, so there should be something at least.

They're all from America.

I looked myself up, strange the amount of people that have had my name with my same parents names, which either aren't that common.

Hmmm, more of my kind than I thought...a lot more! Most of them are around the 17-1800's though, nothing recent. I'll dig them out somehow. Can't really ask 3 of my grandparents...unless a less-metaphorical kind of digging comes into the mix...

Yup; ask your ma and pa for their birth certificates, and your grandparents for their marriage, birth, and if relevant, Death certificates (well...not ask them but you know what I mean). Once you've got that info, it becomes easier to trace backwards, as well as finding details of grandparents' siblings and suchlike.

I had a look at that site earlier. Any tips for getting better results?

The Mormons are probably the best online resource for genealogy.

My dad has been doing our family tree and it's completely fascinating. Be warned though, you need to be methodical and VERY patient.
