NVIDIA GeForce technology to power the sexy images streaming from your next-gen PlayStation
10:30 Sony has announced that it's teaming up with graphics specialists NVIDIA to produce the visual hardware for PS3.
The hardware, based on NVIDIA's next-generation GeForce technology that'll be familiar to PC gamers, will form the core of the PS3's GPU (Graphical Processing Unit). Sony will also use the chip in their other home electronics devices like DVD players as they move towards visual interfaces and, ultimately, a central entertainment hub.
Ken Kutaragi, the Godfather of PlayStation and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said, "In the future, the experience of computer entertainment systems and broadband-ready PCs will be fused together to generate and transfer multi-streams of rich content simultaneously. In this sense, we have found the best way to integrate the state-of-the-art technologies from NVIDIA and SCEI."
Actual details of what the GPU will be capable of are short on the ground. Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, said, "The combination of the revolutionary Cell processor and NVIDIA's graphics technologies will enable the creation of breathtaking imagery that will surprise and captivate consumers."
Emotion Engine, anyone?
Seriously though, Huang also revealed that NVIDIA has been working with Sony since development began on PS3. "Over the past two years NVIDIA has worked closely with Sony Computer Entertainment on their next-generation computer entertainment system," he says. "In parallel, we have been designing our next-generation GeForce GPU."
Along with recent announcements concerning PS3's Cell processor (catch up here) the insides of Sony's next-gen console are slowly getting filled in. It'll still be a while until we actually get to see the thing in action - probably E3 next May if rumours are to be believed - but as soon as we do you'll know all about it.
