I’m sure many of you will add the song you had been humming all day or even the song that really gets on your nerves but you just can’t scrap the tune from your head. Some of you may say a song by the latest pop sensation or some of you may even say the nursery rhythm you heard jingling on the ice cream truck just a second ago.
But, how many of you will actually mention a song which was born and raised in another country? No, I’m not talking about power American music contains to sell itself worldwide, no. I am talking about a foreign song, one with foreign lyrics.
Ok, euro pop may not make all you happy out there and it surely does not make me happy. More disturbing when I think about it. But I am talking about music, which is made in a more traditional, non-cheesy way. You may not come to think it but we are not the only nation with a good taste of music.
I see a vision now. Small, young children, skipping along their foreign streets living in a totally different lifestyle to us. Living in a completely different environment. But I hear and see them singing along to songs in English even though they have no idea what they are saying and they are loving it. This just goes to show that our foreign friends DO have a taste for music, one in such that they do not need the lyrics in their language for it to be listened to and top the charts in their home country.
I then look at the English chart and see nothing foreign, I walk in the streets and hear nothing foreign. How can a small percentage of the world have better music then a larger percentage? Surely England and America are not the only places ‘decent’ music can be made.
You may be wondering why I am saying all this. Well, it was only the other day a friend recommended me to listen to a song, which looked as though it was German. I listened to the song expecting a load of euro trash and what did I get? A song that is listened to a lot and I enjoy thoroughly. I cannot understand the singer but as I do German I understand a few words. Over time music like this will surely improve my speech in German giving me a better accent and then again making me learn a new language along the way and I am enjoying it.
One key factor here is that the song I listened to was a rock song and I rock instruments are more important then the singers voice. But people in other country’s listen to other types of music in English, which requires voice more.
So, don’t be boring, spread your musical taste. Investigate in music from around the world and listen to worldwide versions of your type of music. It doesn’t matter if it is Rock, Rap, Pop or Dance, take a look at some of the music you would never have listened to if you had not read this message…
