Fowler rather surprisingly started the 1995/96 season on the bench as new signing Stan Collymore was given the chance to form a partnership with Ian Rush. However, an injury to Collymore soon gave Fowler his place back, and he later acknowledged that the ploy had given him a further impetus to improve his game, as Roy Evans no doubt intended. Bolton were one of the teams that sufferered as Fowler scored four against them at Anfield, while Arsenal were on the end of another hat-trick before Christmas and Fowler scored four against Manchester United in the two League games. Unfortunately neither Fowler nor anyone else could score against the latter team in the disappointing FA Cup final in May. By the end of the season Fowler had forged a good understanding with Collymore and the combination netted 55 goals in the season, Fowler scoring 36, second only to the prolific Alan Shearer.
There was an inevitable clamour for Fowler to represent England. At the end of the season he was given a chance and he was included in the England Euro 96 sqaud. However, Fowler only came on as sub for four of his seven England appearances, and he has scored just once for his country.Robbie has had to deal with his fair share of injuries. He had to sit out the end of the 97/98 season and miss out on the world cup aswell as suffer a slow start to last season. While he was out he had to witness the emergance of another Liverpool superstar Michael Owen. Then last season he had to deal with the press breathing down his neck over drug allegations, his fight with Le Saux and that goal celebration at home to Everton. All of this nearly prompted him to head south to London with Arsenal very interested in his signature. Luckily for Liverpool Houllier persuaded him to stay. During the summer Houllier named him as vice-captain. 5 months into the season sees Robbie facing another possible operation on an ankle injury that has limited him to 10 minutes of first team action since September. Let's hope Robbie bounces back quickly and returns to where he belongs, top of the scoring chart.
I’m glad to see that he has bounced back but now there is speculation of him leaving due to not playing week in week out. He is a good player and any team would be lucky to have him in their team.
So, how does he measure up to Owen?
Well. Not only has this player just gone and won Liverpool the F.A cup single handidly with 2 goals in the last 10 minutes.
He is just 20 years of age and already has the footballing world at his feet. It all started for him when he was introduced to the England team for the World Cup in France 98'. He played against Argentina and had an amazing game. He scored goal of the tournament in that game with a sensational run and a great finish to top it all off.
He is a great potential for the future but really that is a lie because he is a world class player now and can only get better. He came through the Youth Academy, which is of a very high standard. He was in the same youth team as Danny Murphy and Steven Gerrard.
Michael Owen, a product of Liverpool's youth system burst on the scene towards the end of the 1996/97 season with a debut goal in the away draw with Wimbledon. He was given his first start later that week when Liverpool met Sheffield Wednesday. Michael was a constant threat in that match but he couldn't get the goal his performance deserved, he was still given the Man Of The Match award for his whole hearted performance. Unfortunately for Michael he didn't have another chance to impress that season, as that was the final match.
At the start of the 1997/98 season Michael was still in the Liverpool side, as Robbie Fowler was carrying an injury. Playing alongside the experienced Riedle, Michael again showed his natural talent, again scoring an equaliser against Wimbledon.
With Fowler missing games through injury and suspension Michael was given plenty of chances in the first team, and in a Coca-Cola Cup tie against Grimsby he scored his first hatrick.
Michael is one of the most promising players in England and now has a regular first team place and is sure to be an Anfield favourite for years come.

> Yawn, yawn, yawn.
Now now. Shame about Robbie going up for sale. It won't be the same seeing him in another club shirt.
