When I set mine up I did it at the time of ins**talling Windows XP Pro using the F6 method whils**t booting so that the O/S would be split across both drives at the s**tart.

Now...

My friend has a s**tandard 7200 80GB Wes**tern Digital with Windows XP Pro ins**talled along with a sh*t load of other s**tuff. I have scanned the net for info and I am aware that you are f**ked in the ass if it screws up as you can't fully recover a Raid 0 so he is taking a risk and is fully aware of this. However he wants to go ahead and set up the Raid 0 with an OS and a load of other s**tuff already setup.

Firs**tly, is this possible? I was under the impressions that this needed to be done at the time of OS ins**tallation so that the Bios picks it up at the boot sequence. It is jus**t a s**tandard on-board SATA 150 and the Motherboard CD does have SATA Raid drivers for a full ins**tallation.

Secondly, if that does work and we use the CD to setup the Raid through Windows, will this pick up the hard drives at the boot sequence?

And roughly double what everyone else pays for 160GB!

All went t*ts up in the end. Tried to do it through Windows, which was going to remove the partition from the drive in order to set up a Raid 0. Could've have done a Raid 1 or 0 + 1 without removing the data but not a Raid 0. After the Bios load sequence we used the posting screen to create a Raid 0 which in effect did the same thing.

In the end we went ahead and scrap around 100GB of stuff to get rid of it, fresh boot of XP and it was up and running. A hell of a lot longer than it took to set mine up but then again I did mine from a fresh boot and the sheer speed of the drives enabled me to literally urinate on the installation at a really fast speed.

He now has 160GB for roughly half of what I paid for my 70GB!

You need Windows XP SP1 or above on the CD for it to detect S-ATA HDDs, else you'll have to use a driver floppy for the Windows install.

I would imagine you don't need to reformat to put a RAID0 array in place. I can remove one of my disks, format it, and put it back in and rebuild my RAID 1 array - I'm sure the RAID Utility that came with his motherboard or whatever will tell you if you can or not.
