I then tried testing the disc on my friends PS2. It worked fine throughout chapter 16. This is the strange part:
His PS2 is horizontal. Mine is vertical. I then turned mine horizontally, and it worked fine. Once back in the vertical position it continued to have problems.
Another friend suggested that this may be due to the lense in the PS2 itself. Perhaps it is not quite good enough to read the disc properly in the vertical position, and relies on the disc being held closer whilst in the horizontal position.
Does the problem have a nice solution? Will the problem get worse otherwise?
I can put up with it, except that it means that to watch the movie I have to keep changing the orientation of the PS2. Doh.
Its just the fact that in the vertical postion the dual layer discs are not close enough to the lense when reading the bottom layer (the gravity point). The PS2 isn't the best of dvd players and the lense is probably pretty naff
Totally agree with what Wookie said.
One other thing to consider although it may only make a small diference is the placement and coatweight of the ink. If you have a lot of black or silver on one side then it will not help things to spin consistantly even.
As it works fine in the horizontal position is it worth replacing? Or should I jsut stick with it.
As for the question about chapters 16+, they work fine. It is only that one area.
Thanks for your help.
I believe it's to do with the distance between the laser head and the disc. In the horizontal postition, obviously gravity will (or should) keep the disk fairly constant. When vertical, there's more scope for movement and disc wobble.
Ever noticed how some CDs/DVDs make more noise in a drive than others? That's disc wobble - vibration that can be caused by something as simple as the hole not being dead centre of the disc, or by a slight defect in the 'flatness' of the disc.
Vinyl records (remember those?) used to warp terribly if stored in the wrong conditions, and to a much lesser extent, CDs and DVDs can do the same. It may not be how *you* are storing the disc; it could have happened at any point in the journey from manufacture to your collection.
CDs and DVDs are read from the centre of the disc to the outside edge. (I believe that the second layer of dual-layer discs reads from the outside edge back to the centre, to minimise the transition period, but I'm not 100% sure.)
Anyway, if there is any distortion or warping of the disc, this will be more pronounced at the outer edge, and while the distance involved may be unnoticeable to the human eye, it is more than enough to throw the laser off track, causing skips, jumps and/or other problems. I understand that the structure of the Jaws DVD is quite complex, and not exactly 'standard', due to all the extras, and has caused problems in many dedicated DVD players, so this no doubt is not helping the situation.
If you skip to chapter 17 and later, does the disc play okay? What I'd imagine is that Chapter 16 is near the edge of the disc, where the head has problems in the vertical position. There's probably a layer transition around there, and from some point in chapter 16/17, the head starts to move back toward the centre, automatically eliminating the problem.
If you know of anyone with a dedicated player which has the ability to show head and layer position while playing a film (such as my Sony DVP-S725D), you could see the exact position of the head when Chapter 16 is being played, and this would confirm my suspicions.
Unfortunately, I do not have the Jaws movie, so I can't investigate it myself. However, some time ago a similar problem was mentioned regarding the Blade DVD, which I do have. My PS2 had no problem with my copy of the disc, but I used the method described above to check the location of the chapter concerned (which I think was 16 or 18), and it was indeed at the edge of the disc. I think that person took it back and exchanged it for another copy, which worked fine.
Hope this all helps!
