...that Half Life 2 and Counterstike: Source won't work on my laptop.

2.66 GHz
512Mb RAM

Seems OK, but 64Mb GeForceFX 5200 seems a bit slow compared to everyone else's.

Incorrect.
Half-Life 2 is designed to run fairly well on any system (within reason), just to varying levels of detail.

I remember reading an article on how it would run at 45fps on a (64mb) GF4 MX440 and 55fps on a Radeon 9700 pro. That's only 10fps more, the difference was that it looked a lot sexier on the 9700.

It will run it perfectly fine on low but will have some major FPS drops. I had it running on a Geforce 4 mx440 for a few days whilst I waited for my replacement 9800pro.

128Mb cards go cheap these days.

Your specs aren't too far off mine. I reckon if you turned unneccesary stuff down like decal and smoke quality, don't have the resolution too high, the Physics may be ok. Valve have really made sure the lowest required spec can still run the game well.

EDIT - forgot you're on a lappy, ignore the Graphics card comment

Probably isn't worth £25 of my money. I used that Microsoft website that tells you if things work, and I just scraped it. But I don't want to play it if it looks like a piece of doggy-do. Also, the physics will look bad if they run at a slow frame-rate. And I want to see physics!

We're talking graphics card RAM, not machine RAM, right?

Try this:

It actually runs surprisingly well on slower machines.
