Yesterday everything worked fine, but this morning, trying to turn on my PC, nothing happened at all. No power up, nothing.

I tried using the cable to this old PC in place of my curren one, and that didn't work either (this old thing can just about get online). The extension cable seems to work as the monitor, printer and scanner, router and modem all power up, it's just the main unit that is dead.

Does anybody have any idea as to what the main cause of this could be?

I'm expecting it to be the power unit in the PC itself, but as I have no experience of this, I couldn't tell for sure. Could it also be a burnt out processor / motherboard, or something else?

I was going to just get on down to PC world and get a new power supply to try it out, but again, due to lack of knowing anything about them, am a little unsure as to which brands are good and bad, as from what I gather, cheap and chearful don't cut it in this area. Any tips or recommendations for a new power unit?

Thanks.

Managed to swap it over this morning to a spare one a relative had wiouth any problems, very handy. Still can't believe that the original one just stopped working like that though.

Cheers for the replies Nimco.

Power supplies are very easily replaced. You won't do any damage removing the connectors as long as you don't do any stupid like I did the other day and not realise one of the connectors had a little latch on - it doesn't any more :(

It doesn't matter what order all the connections go in - just any connector that fits. Just make sure when you're removing connectors from CD/Floppy/Hard drives etc that you are careful. They can be very tough to remove, but just try to pull them straight out without bending anything.

Double checked all the connections I could find, as well as any switches learking about the place, and still nothing.

I didn't consider the fan when powering up, but that didn't work either, so fair guess it is the PSU.

Are they fairly simple to take out and replace??

I may give the one in this old PC a go before buying a new one, just to see what happens, but am a little unsure as to what damage I may do when pulling out the connections from the motherboard and such.

Do the power connectors need to be in any particular order when connecting them up to the CD ROM'S HD's, etc?

I would be fairly sure it was the Power Supply that was faulty, seeing as the failure of any other component would be shown at the POST screen. Make sure all the cables inside from the PSU are connected - e.g. ensure the motherboard has power, etc.

I'm not sure, but I would imagine the PSU fans would power up if the PSU was working at all. Since they're not, it probably means it has failed. Just as a check - make sure you haven't accidentally flicked any switches on the PSU (main on/off switch, voltage selector, etc).
