Luckily though i need look no further then to my good old home of the USA for something to talk about, so for this rant i'll be concentrating on the aftermath that the brawl at the Indiana Pacers vs Detroit Pistons game will bring to the beautiful game of Basketball.
Basketball is a special sport, not for the athleticism of the players, not for the excitement of the game but for how close the fans can get to their hero's on the court (if they can afford a few thousand dollars for a game anyway) they only have to lean forward from their seat and be able to tap the players on the shoulder and have a good chat with them if they want to. They also can have a good slanging match with them, only have to look at the legendary show downs Reggie Miller had with Spike Lee any time the Pacers arrived in the Garden. These were all part of the game and both the players and fans enjoyed them.
However finally the line between good banter and straight out chaos was crossed. What went from good natured sledging went into intentional provocation when that idiot chucked the drink at Artest. Now basketball players aren't exactly renowned for their long tempers, players like Charles Barkley and Latrell Spreewell in particular, so to do something like that wasn't the smartest thing in the world.
However why the talk now of new rulings being brought in such as plexiglass around the court or moving the fans back from the court? Firstly moving the fans back won't do a damn thing, not unless you really move it far back, moving it back a few feet will only stop women, weak men and kids throwing stuff at the players, you'll still have the drunken fools throwing stuff, they'd just need to be a bit more skilled and accurate and the plexiglass is another stupid idea. One of the things i love to see in the game is the hustle and effort the players give to retrieve a lost ball, with plexiglass no longer will we see such glorious sights as Superman with his 325 pound 7 foot body flying into around row 4 trying to keep the ball in play.
Basketball has a special bond between the fans and players no other sport has, changing anything will mean this special bond will be lost and the game just won't be as exciting or fun anymore. Why ruin the game for the majority just for the stupidity of the few? Do we really want to go back to the bad days of having nets around the court? I don't think so

To be fair you only had to look at Barkley the wrong way for him to react :-D

The players cannot be held completely responsible here... in fact, the idiots in the Pistons crowd are in fact more to blame. Should Detroit not be forced to play a few matches behind closed doors? Or are the same thugs going to be allowed back in to throw some more stuff next time something like this happens? You can argue that this is unfair on the other members of the crowd who were not involved in the throwing, but then, look what happened to Roma in football. One fan throws something and all the fans get a 3 match ban from their own stadium. Surely something like this should be brought into effect?
