I can actually imagine Sean William Scott pulling off a role like that. I feel that he's quite a versatile actor. Although he's in alot of comedy he was in bulletproof monk which wasn't a totally comedic role. Anyway the evil dead was funnny at times. Maybe he could play a character similar to the one in welcome to the jungle?
I read the rumour of a remake a week or so ago, and remember reading Raimi saying that if he didn't direct it then a famous Asian director would (my guess would be the guy who directed The Grudge).
Whoever directs it doesn't really matter though, as it'll end up rubbish anyway. Some remakes work and some don't, but trying to remake a cult classic like Evil Dead? Again? With the guy from American Pie as Ash? It's gotta be some kind of bad dream/evil baseless rumour.

Looking into it I see there's not yet a script or a director in place, so this must be a very weak rumour as it's unusual to cast first.
