I don't know about 'all' DVD players, but PS2 cannot play VCD's.

Wrong!!!

PS2s can only play proper UK VCDs, not those dodgy one that "a mate" can get you.

Do you actually have any yourself that you can play?

I ask because:

a) There is no mention of it in the manual
b) I've read in several locations that it can't
c) I have a 2-disc Video CD of Tina Turner's "Simply The Best '94" - official UK disc, proper Video CD (i.e. not one of the odd-format Philips CD-i things), and it does not play.

My PS2 gives me a screen similar to the options screen, but in red, with two floating cubes, and the message "Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 disc".

Yeah, actually. Iw was Bon Jovi.

Thing is, even if it's a proper VCD, it still might be a US or EU one. There's only about 400 proper VCDs made.

Either that, or you have a scratched disk. Why don't you just use your PC. A normal CD-ROM will do it.

"PAL/NTSC/SECAM compatible
These discs will only play on a standard CD player.
These discs can only be used on players with VideoCD/MPEG capability."

Discs are fine - play well on my PC, just stating that PS2 doesn't want to know.

Not saying that yours *doesn't* play, just that everything I've read and my experience suggests that PS2 isn't compatible. If you have a disc that plays, I am at a loss to explain it!

Sorry... forgot to add...

Which would indicate that 100% VCD compatibility is not guaranteed.

I don't have any to try because if i did i would know wouldn't I,but some PS2 magazines say yes and some say no, There's quite alot of VCD's which aren't availible on DVD yet and i would like to run them on my Playstation 2.

I know Xing PLayer on the PC runs them easy but i don't like pc's for that kind of stuff because you can't watch a film with your mates on computer chairs can you really, and my mate who spent alot of money on a DVD drive for his pc tried linking it up to his tv and he can't get it out of this tiny screen with all them purple play, rewind, forward buttons on the screen haha
I think when we get the internet on the playstation 2 we'll be able to download software that will allow us to play anything we want to maybe even dreamcast games.

Dreamcast CD-ROMS are physically differant to PS2 ones and so can't be played.
