Currently stuck in development hell is Halloween 8, rumoured to star Jamie Lee Curtis and Busta Rhymes. Jason X (Friday the 13th part 10) is complete and ready for release. There are also rumours about Child’s Play 5, Blair Witch 3 and Nightmare on Elmstreet 8.
Out of every genre, horror movies have got to be the ones that spawn the most sequels. However, out of every genre, horror movies are most likely to make very, very bad sequels.
As well as the movies mentioned above there have also been sequels for Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, Hellraiser, Scream and numerous others.
One of the main reasons for this is that the bad guy in the original gets very little screen time, but by part two or three they have become the hero. For an example of this look at the end credits of Hellraiser. Doug Bradley’s character appears about two thirds of the way down the cast list and was called simply ‘Lead Cenobite’. By the time the sequel came out, ‘Lead Cenobite’ was renamed Pinhead and became the hero of the subsequent movies. The recent sequel to Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal was ruined by the fact that Hannibal Lector had become the hero. He became a parody of his former self and was not in the least bit scary!
For the first film, the scriptwriter is able to mould the character to fit the plot. However, for the sequels the character already exists so the plot has to fit around the character.
After racking my brain I can think of only two genuinely good horror sequels, Evil Dead 2 and Bride of Chucky (the third Child’s Play sequel). The reason for the success of these movies is that they traded in their horror for humour so that they essentially became gory comedies.
To make a horror movie that can spawn good sequels I think one of the following tactics is necessary:
1. Have a really original hero who is, for some reason, always going to be drawn to evil (such as Buffy or Mulder and Scully)then pit that character against different villains in each sequel. Still, it would be hard to make it genuine horror rather than Indiana Jones style action.
2. Rather than having characters coming back for sequels, have locations or objects. Blair Witch could have been perfect for this (and maybe still can be if part three goes okay).
3. Have the audience side with the bad guy from film one. A character like Patrick Bateman from American Psycho could have worked in more than one film (if only American Psycho wasn’t so terrible). However, this can be controversial and didn’t work for Hannibal in the sequel to Silence of the Lambs.

Saw the band in Swindon and the following night in Bristol. Did you see them play with Focus in April?
The next gig (as far as I know) is in Bristol again on Nov 7th a the Fleece. I'm a bit of a guitar nut and interested to that Chris is stil playing his PRS and hasn't been playing with his trusty Les Paul for a while.

Wow Its already made!! Thats the first Ive heard of it!!
Part three is alright, probably worth watching but part four is much better - Its set in the past, present and future which is a bit of a twist and tells how the puzzle box came about and where it ended up, etc.. Its called Hellraiser: Bloodline and well worth watching!!
