Eriksson urged to select Downing
Frank Queudrue has urged England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson to name fellow Middlesbrough player Stewart Downing, 20, in the squad to face Spain.
Eriksson will reveal his England squad for Wednesday's game over the weekend.
And Queudrue said: "It's not a bad shout to pick Stewart because, if you look at the England side, they are playing two defenders on the left.
"If I was Sven-Goran Eriksson then I would pick Stewart for the left because of his very good form at the moment."
Queudrue continued: "For a centre-forward it must be a dream to play with him because he has the pace to beat his man in a one-on-one situation and then deliver a quality cross.
"He is also clever with the ball and that makes it easy to play with him - he just has so much ability and this is the right moment for him to be given a chance - he deserves a call-up."
----------
I feel strongly this is the right thing for Sven-Goran Eriksson to do next, having seen Downing perform and impress in some big games recently this season, but, we all know what Eriksson's like when it comes to 'doing the right thing' - especially when that left-side is involved!
However, this is a friendly match coming up...
And, for once - possibly the only chance in his career under Eriksson, looking at Gareth Barry and co. - Stewart Downing could just get lucky. It's also important to bear in mind that Steven Gerrard, for one, will remain on the sidelines for the meeting of Spain.
So, will he or won't he?
