The computer comes on ok but at the "windows is strting up" screen the progress bar stops 2/3 of the way through.
It's done this before and sorted itself out but it there a way to get it working now?

I pressed F8 at start-up and went to "use last known good boot up" or something like that.

No thanks, that's why I'm in this mess.
I've sort of got it fixed except now I can't use sound or any ethernet connections as I thibk it was the drivers I installed for them that caused the problem.

Do you still have your Windows CD? You could try a repair from it.

I tried safe mode but that won't start either.

Press F8 at the startup and see if you can get into Safe Mode
