Anyway, could it happen here? I realise there isn't much of a fundementalist Christian movement here, but there are plenty of things to get wound up about and blind people. I.e, the Mail today 'Family Planning for 11yr olds' - so all the kids will have sex. Ian Huntley, paedophiles, immigrants, litigation culture, the general 'social and moral degredation of our grat country'. All it needs is a party (UKIP > right) to hijack the concerns and nab a large vote. Perhaps they won't rape the people for money in the same way, but they're hardly going to object to restrictions on civil liberties - heck, ID cards don't get a slating, while we all must scream about why Erikson has been a bad boy. It's not entirely the same, but potentially, couldn't the electorate be so wound by these 'TERRIBLE FEARS!' and not by the things really hurting them?
Or is it already happening?
No one was buying Tony Blair's excuses for war but no one did anything about it when he told the entire nation to go toss themselves over what they thought.
Although my roomate tells me that he's passed some sort of law that's remarkably like Hitler's "Enabling act" passed in 1933 in Germany...
We've got our own corruptions and America's right wing isn't one of them.
