OK, as part of my final year at uni I have to do an individual project, a rather large one and to start of I need to create a webpage using php and mysql. Won't go into details of what the site has to do as thats not too important right now.
First off the basics.

I've looked at PHP once or twice before, so hopefully that wont be to bad.
Did a bit on SQL ages ago as well as some database work but I'm not sure whats different between SQL and mySQL.

Have downloaded all the stuff for apache, php and mySQL from http://www.aesthetic-theory.com/learn.php?server2 and installed before but something went wrong so I'm in the process of installing again just to make sure its all working properly.

Just not sure where to start.
Have a few ebooks to try make things easier but a few things that don't seem to clear....

mySQL files, someone give me an example of one and what the file type they are?

No doubt a few more things will crop up so I'll post them here too :0)

Thanks

That Aesthetic theory site is an excellent start. It'll get all the components talking to one another. As to where to start? Difficult. I do it at work, so for eight hours a day I've been learning mySQL, PHP, Css, Xhtml and feel I've came on really far with it. Online tutorials SPECIFICALLY for Php / Mysql dynamic pages on websites are probably your best bet. I'll see if I've still got my Noob links, but I'm at home at the moment so it'll be tomorrow.

Mysql files?

check out c:\mysql\data.
The directory name is the database name. I.e. "mysql" is the mysql database date. As you seem, it contains masses of smaller files.

run "cmd"
cd "c:\mysql\bin"
"mysql -u root"
"use mysql;"
"select * from user where user = "root";"

And that'll show some data.

It's a VERY steep learning curve. Best of luch. I'll try and get you those links tomorrow.

[edit]"Did a bit on SQL ages ago as well as some database work but I'm not sure whats different between SQL and mySQL." Very Little. MySQL is opensource. It's not as advanced as say Oracle, but other than that I can't say.

One further thing.

If you are using MySQL then a GUI interface is a godsend.

Look for "mysql-front" and "free mascon".

Mysql-front will allow you to connect, create tables, create fields and define some data. It can't handle text or bigtext fields though (vital in web dev).

Use Free mascon for this. Unless you pay registratioln for free mascon, it'll not let you change table structure. It's a better program, but I find using both together saves my 49 dollars. :)

Unless you really have a desire to learn how to set up php/apache/mysql I really recommend you just download a preconfigured package such as xampp (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html). 2 or 3 clicks and you have a fully configured install of apache/php/mysql ready to go. It also comes with phpMyAdmin pre-installed and other such useful stuff.

phpMyAdmin is a browser based GUI for MySQL. If you've done SQL before you'll be pretty comfortable with MySQL, syntax is pretty much identical, except when you move into more advanced stuff.

As for tutorials, try sitepoint.com, http://www.sitepoint.com/subcat/php-tutorials has a nice selection (include a fairly good introductory one).

This is the one that got me started. It's simplistic, but gets you off to a good start. Hope this helps.

phpMyAdmin is a very powerful, web-based database administration tool. You can view/edit database/table structures, as well as modify table data. Depending on priveleges, you can also do things like modify user rights and things.
